“Mom, will working out make me skinnier?!”

I’ve got to admit, when my 8 year old daughter said these words to me recently (especially the word “skinnier”), I immediately went on the defense – worried that someone had made fun of her or called her names. As a mom, and as someone who grew up dealing with weight problems, I am SUPER sensitive to this issue. Kids can be cruel. Kids can be mean. And, I just don’t want my daughter to experience some of the harsh words I did as a kid.

My first response was “What makes you ask this?” I have to say, I was surprised because we went on to have a very positive conversation about being healthy. Yes, I am very conscious about using the word “healthy” in place of “fat” and “skinny.” We went on to talk about how working out will help your heart be healthy and it will help burn fat in your body. We also talked about how eating good food has to play a HUGE part in being healthy and that although it is okay to treat yourself, treats don’t need to be an every meal or every day thing. We talked about how when we eat good foods we feel better and have more energy vs. when we eat lots of sugar and “bad stuff” that doesn’t fuel our bodies.

Bottom line…Kamy is 8. She needs to be comfortable in her own skin and feel good about herself. But, she also needs to be a kid and needs to know that she is beautiful no matter what her size – I was SURE to stress this several times during our conversation. I’m excited that she is asking me questions about being healthy, because I want her to learn. And, if these questions can come out of self awareness vs. outside factors like “mean girls,” then that is even better!

Parenting is tough. I totally get that what works for one parent or family may not work for the other. I never judge. But, I will say that having an open conversation like this made my heart happy. And, what’s even cooler is that Kamy has worked out with me 2 days in a row and is excited to keep going! Kind of nice to have my own personal accountability partner right at home! 🙂
